Wheel Clicking Noise
I have clicking noise I can't find. It is a 'wheel rhythm' noise. Sounds like its coming from the front. I've replaced all four bearings and races, and have 'turned' the rotors. No change whatsoever. I have not worked with an assistant to locate it. Spinning the wheels off the ground does not produce the noise.
Anybody have a similar experience? ------------------ '83 SC |

Do you have the new bearings adjusted good and tight so there is less than 1/8" 'rock' back and forth at the top of the tire with a near-empty tank of gas? For some reason I recall VW's and Porsches (the air-cooled ones, anyway) are more 'sensitive' to wheel bearing 'play' with a light fuel load.
Does your car have brake pad wear indicator sensors? I have heard 'clicking' like that on Mercedes 450's when the pads were worn-out and the rotors warped! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

The pads were the first to go when I bought the car in October and the noise did not change. I did not see any of those little metal strips that sing when the pads get thin.
the rotors have actually been turned twice. Last turn was a 'one cut.' the brake folks and I agree that these rotors are straight enough for Indy. I had heard, and since the bearings are new, that there should be NO play. Read it somewhere, maybe Haynes. So the nut is simply on finger tight, and there is none, or maybe the tiniest bit of play. It's been suggested that a rear noise might be travelling toward the front. It's still a mystery to me. I love mysteries but... It's quite audible coasting at very low speeds, so I think I'll go to a quiet garage with an assistant. THX. ------------------ '83 SC |

I believe there is always supposed to be 0.001" to 0.004" of axial (end) play at the hub, even with new bearings and a fresh packed moly grease job, and a new grease seal, as measured with a dial indicator. I usually go by the 'wheel rock' meathod, but I did measure the end play once just to be sure 1/16" at the tire was OK, and I believe it came out to 0.0015" ... so I was happy!

If it is possible that it is coming from the rear, my suspicions lean toward the emergency brake assemblies, or cables ... try adjusting the shoes, and see if the sound changes any at all. Once, I had a mysterious click appear after having the rear rotors off and cleaning the emergency brake shoes/applying anti-sieze at all of the rubbing points ... had the cable ' bowed' a bit too much outboard, and it was rubbing the hub, somewhere inside, once per revolution, sounded a lot like a cricket doing the mating 'call' thing ...

Or at least it sure sounds like it. A cricket once each time around. My e-brake should be looked at anyway. By jove I think you've got it. ------------------ '83 SC |
