993 headlight "module" doesn't work

Hi,

I have a 96 993 and have an intermittent headlight operation. My mechanic says it is the light control module. Where is this thing and can I open it up and get some of the electronic or mechanical engineers here at work to repair it? Is there a way to confirm that the "module" is bad? These things are expensive to replace. Please help.

Can you please help dear Sandy... she has had a front light going on and off...we are wondering if someone (probably me) will tear into the module and try to fix it. One input we had was to back date the light system...being cheaper than buying one "control module" for the lights.
Anyone know about how these work?

Otto has a electronics rebuild service. They maybe able to help you.

Also, do you have the litronic system that uses the control unit 99363192300 that has now been superceded to 00004320437?

Could it simply be the connector in back of the light assy not making a solid connection?

yes...the first mechanic put connectors on and off and said the "module" was bad....the light worked for a few weeks...and now intermittant again.. so you could be right... I'm trying to help Sandy.. if it was my car I'd pull it all apart and double check the tightness of the connections.. I assume the mechanic did this .. he is very good and should have done this... we are trying to avoid paying for a new module if it can be reworked some how... I need to do more homework to confirm the type of lights and maybe get a schematic

ok, Don or other helpers... I went and looked at Sandy's car 96 993 and it has these silver electronic boxes inside the trunk on either side. ... are those the HID modules? If so what about the idea of switching them from left to right and see if the behaviour changes?
Is switching the modules a big deal? I didn't look real good at what connectors are involved..

CAREFUL - high voltage involved. I don't know anything about HID lights, except the high voltage warning.

Ask AFJuvat or post on Rennlist.

As Don said take a look at the 993 board on Rennlist and do a search. I am not familiar with the HID version of the 993 headlight, but I had to work on my 993's standard bulbs because of a similar problem. It had a problem that is not unusual for the 993 in that the spring clip that holds the bulb in place sometimes loses tension causing an intermittent connection. I just rebent the spring clip to more firmly hold the bulb in place; no more problem.
