Trouble Shooting
 

I have a 1983 911s. I have not used it for about 4 months, it has sat in my garage. Last week I tried to start it , but the battery was dead. I trickled charged the battery and tonight I tried to start the car again. The car would not start, although the battery is turninng the starter over quickly. It doesn’t sound flooded and I don’t smell gas.

The problem seems like it might be electrical, so I checked all the fuses and they are ok. I can’t tell if the fuel pump is working and I read in the manual that the fuel pump has a relay, but I do not know how to check whether or not the relay has failed.

Before I have the car towed in to the repair shop I was wondering if there is anything else I might try. The car was running great before I put it up for the summer. ( I live in Las Vegas so driving a convertible in the desert heat is no fun). I am a novice at this but no afraid to try some simple diagnostics before I give up. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Get a can of starting fluid and spray some into the airbox (a little, not a whole lot). If it starts and dies, its a fuel problem, if it doesn't start its an electrical problem.

Thanks, I tried the starting fluid and the engine started and died; what is my next step to determine the problem with the fuel system? Does the fact that the car was not run for several months factor into this ? Also, I noticed that I am very low on gas.
