SitHot, you are a life saver. I will be pulling my dash, cleaning it, replacing my one speaker with two smaller ones and reinstalling it. Thanks again.

Watch it...you'll give Tom a big head here... Seriously, it's great that he happened to call, then I remembered to ask the question.
Yeah, thanks Tom. Always good to learn something.

Only thoughts...so don't take this as gospel. I don't recall Porsche offering a stereo with speakers in the doors in '73. I'm guessing that your door speakers were installed by an aftermarket stereo store here in the USA. If no speaker installed at the factory, it may mean that no radio was installed. The radio, and the speaker were both on the options list in those years. Dunno about '73 for sure, but my '72 dash speaker grille just plugs in and out...posts slipping into a plastic plug that "grips" the grille. The speaker itself is held in place by 4 Phillips head screws with concave washers under their heads.

Different size speaker inserts...you mean the dash grille? You could be right about the dash replacement. For some period of time, the replacement dash offered by the factory had done away with the dash removable panel, because cracking dashes had the crack usually leading from the rear left corner of the opening.

Here's a pic of an original speaker...may aid you in figuring out the mounting:

Another thumbs-up here for the twin speaker set-up from the guy on e-bay(woody's?) Just installed it today with a "new-to-me" vintage Becker radio and the sound is more than adequate for my needs. Plus, I get to keep that vintage car feel while I'm driving my "antique car" A modern, high quality system just wouldn't seem right in the old girl - plus, it's good enough that I can still hear the radio at 75mph with the top off!

wreckah? You're going to love it. Even when the speaker was realatively new in my radio, it was hard to hear "at speed"...these speakers are a two way design, having both a dome tweeter and a 3.5" woofer. With two of them side by side, you'll be hearing things you didn't think your radio was capable of... This can be considered an unsolicited testimonial...I'm very pleased with this speaker replacement. Good sound while the car still looks original? Fantastic!

yeah, i'm anxious to hear the difference too, as our original speaker is really almost totally worn out.

We will connect it to the original bluapunkt, and we're going to install a modern 6-CD changer too underneath the blaupunkt (which we get for free as a sort of sponsorship ) , but it's going to be a temporary install, as we don't want to change anything in our original interior.
