choosing an exhaust
Fellow Pelicanites,
I've got a 76 911S Targa sitting in my garage that I want to use as a daily driver (and eventually take to the track). I'm looking into getting exhaust and headers for a little more power. Any suggestions out there, please. |

Depends on your price range.
For about 1500 dollars you could achieve probably the most popular set up used on these boards and by me. I've never heard of anyone being disappointed with the sound and performance of an M&K Mufller matched with SSI heat exchangers. heres the links to the two http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/POR_911M_EXHmuf_pg3.htm http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/POR_911M_EXHpip_pg2.htm#item5 if your budget is running low, then try the SSI's which will guarantee you power and try modding your stock muffler to be a bit more sportier which will cost you less money. If you're in a location that doesn't require heat, you can just get a set of headers and whatever muffler you like. This allows you to remove alot of crap from the rear of the car and reduce the weight. Weight reduction is probably just as imprortant as the small hp increase you'd see from the exhaust changes.
I had headers on the 2.7 that was in my 76. The headers (George's) weighed about 12 or 13 lbs (IIRC) and the Supertrapps I used with them only weighed 6 lbs each. The factory exhaust weighed around 50 lbs (again, IIRC). I also removed the heater blower motor and all the associated heater stuff. Saved alot of weight. And ti sounded glorious. :>) Mike

I've got a set of SSI's and a GHL 2in/2out on my 81. If you go with a 2in/2out be prepared for some resonance back in the cabin typically between 2-3k rpm.

I have SSIs with M&K 2in2out this setup came with my 84 3.2L and the 2in2out pipe was LOUD! to loud for my taste but after speaking to M&K they said just cap one of the outputs with a cap, they actually sell caps for this purpose. So I guess if I bought it myself I would go with M&K 2in1out for street use. However, if you will street and track the car I would go with M&K 2in2out and just cap one side for street use. This way you can remove the cap on the track and get the best of both worlds.
Another thing I learned from M&K is that they produced early version of these pipes and then over the past few years a newer version, here's the diffrence: The early version has no packing material and are louder, I have this pipe but it sounds great on the street with one side capped. The new versions have packing material and are not as loud. If I had a street\track car I would preffer the earlier version, but they are hard to find. You may wish to contact M&K about them. Here's the website http://www.mkexhaust.com/ Good luck

Sound is a very subjective thing, but I will tell you this: the build quality and weight of the M&K mufflers are second to none.
