911 Windshields
Are there any differences between a windshield for a 1986 911 coupe and lets say a 1982 other than the built in radio antenna.
The reason I ask is because the '86 windshield will cost me $810 installed as compared to a '82 which is $230. Thanks, Charles. |

I have never heard of ANY contour changes in any of the 911's over the years! Do you have a part nuber for that '82 windshield without the antenna?
If it is 901.541.101.21 for a plain (untinted) or 901.541.101.31 for a tinted one, you can be assured it fits all the way back to the '72 models, unchanged! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

I am dealing with insurance and glass company stuff right now. Here's the scoop: The contours are the same '72 - '89. but the tinted OE windshield for my car is no longer available (the $230 unit). The dealer assured me they will never be able to get one again. the replacement now is the one with the antenna built in. $600 or so.
If anyone knows where the non-antennae glass (tinted green-on-green) can be found, I would like to know. Then again, the glass company wants to use just certain sources..... ------------------ '83 SC |

I had to replace my windshield on my 83SC
Targa and after calling around to local autoglass shops,I found a PPG windshield for my car, tinted for $160.00. |

Safelite is a national francheiser which offers tinted or non-tinted aftermarket alternatives for $149. Check with your local Safelite dealer or PPG dealer. Good luck with it.

Safelite is the firm that is having trouble getting OE glass for my car. I am not interested in aftermarket glass. My insurance company will be paying for this. So I kinda don't care that the new (german) replacement costs $600 just for the glass. I'd rather not have the antenna but.....

To those who've used aftermarket glass -- is the tint a good match for the early factory glass? I'm doing a "near concours" restoration and would hate to pay the big $$ for factory glass unless the aftermarket stuff is unacceptable. My current windshield is definitely unacceptable, that's all I know at this point...

Sorry to get off the track but I plan on changing the windscreen on my ’69 in the next couple of weeks and would love to get one with the built in antenna. Have a friend who owns a panel shop so getting rid of the antenna in the panel and hole isn’t an issue.
With due consideration to Warren's comments above, has anyone tried putting a newer windscreen into an older car? Regards, ------------------ Paul 911T'69 |

From the information I have gathered, German producion glass is definetly more prone to pitting then the American counterpart. If you had a choice to go with a PPG product that was similar to the OE, I personally would go with American. Yes, I know, there may be a few things that the USA can be superior in.
