78SC ROW -Oil Level needle raises on hard accel & hard braking (no pics this thread)
Hi All,
[quick note to thank everyone again for all the great help/assistance with my AAV valve, and the AAR regulator (and mixture) problems...] 1. Oil Level Sender was replaced in Feb and is known good. 2. I suspect the guage to be good as well. Before you say "trust the stick only" -- becasue I do really only trust the dipstick, I just have this question: Why would the needle RAISE on hard accel and hard braking only? During normal driving it remains constant at a known good level. Another vaccum leak someplace maybe? It's strange. I know, fun one -- thanks again for the help guys! -Tom

I doubt both conditions actually have to do with the oil level raising.
Keep in mind, acceleration and deceleration forces could be acting on the assembly itself. The assembly is in the front of the tank, but the arm curves towards the rear of the tank. So...... Maybe acceleration acts on the oil (oil moves to the rear) to raise the sender float and de-celeration (braking) acts on the sender float assembly itself to move the arm as if it were floating higher. OR Vice versa? OR magic? ![]()

Could a sender that was installed incorrectly cause such behavior? Again, with normal driving it's fine. Only on accel and hard break does it surge up.

In my car, if you are about to the point where the needle is normally at the halfway point, then it will swing quite a bit when you slosh the oil around in the tank by accelarating or braking. I can see itmove when I am going uphillor downhill unless it is showing all the way full at operating temp..

Mine goes down on acceleration, as the pump draws oil from the tank. Most times I have noticed the nedle is at about halfway during normal sustained speed driving. Heck, it goes into the red sometimes. I don;t sweat it, though. I know the level is good as checked by the stick.

IMHO, yes. All the sender is, is a float on an arm that turns a potentiometer. It could not be otherwise.
