Just added oil for the first time

Ok, nervous time, just added my first oil. I've done my reading.
Had driven the car for a while, its warm, temp is just above the middle mark.
At idle on pretty level ground.
The gauge is at the read mark. I check the dip stick, oil is just at the bottom "dimple".
Add about half a quart, check, ended up at 1 1/4 quarts this at 1804 miles of driving. Now oil is in the middle of the stick, between the dimples, and the gauge is in the middle.

We'll see how this first test goes.

Jay

Be aware that quarter-century-old air-cooled engines inevitably use more oil than do modern liquid-cooled, fine-tolerance engines that don'e experience the same coefficients of expansion of the metal parts. There's not a thing wrong with that, just as there's not a thing wrong with a Pratt & Whitney R2800 radial aircraft engine dripping out a few quarts overnight. If it didn't, THEN you'd worry.

I expected the addition. Just afraid of the dreaded over filling.

Tip of the day: Don't wear a tie when checking your oil level with the engine running!

Definitely not! But years ago, I was on a job and opened an HVAC fan room door and my tie pulled straight out and came within about an inch of a fan pulley and belt. Quit wearing ties on job inspections right then and there.

Glad to hear, scary thought though. One of my former coworkers, was shredding some paper and bent over to pick up some stuff she dropped on the floor and caught her hair in the shredder and it took a good chunk away. While extremely funny, I certaintly would want to be the one with that happening.

Back to topic, when I bought my car, I read everywhere on here to check the oil and constantly check it and for the life of me, I couldn't find the damn dipstick. I looked everywhere and then finally realized it was under the cap.
