clutch adjustment at top ,makes pop when pressed in
 

My '83SC clutch pedal started to get some free play at the pedal in top or
released position, ie, the pedal has some free movement, of about an inch or
so before feeling any resistance or slack from the clutch cable. when I press it in it makes kind of a pop sound sounds like the noise is coming from the gearbox area
hope theres a way to adjust .When car is running does not slip at all just an iniitial sound as I push the pedal in like of like a loose chain sound
I have no idea where I can adjust the clutch pedal tightness any help would be great
