Congratulations.
You need to start work on restoring a 912 (902) now. Blink your eyes and she will have a learner’s permit. Best, Grady

Grady....I searched and found a gearbox type 902. Is the 912 considered a 902 also?

Yes, the original Porsche 901 had to be renamed 911 after Peugeot claimed all 3-digit models with a zero in the middle. Likewise the 902 (then yet to be introduced) was renamed 912. Vestiges of this can be seen in part numbers and engine and transmission type numbers.
The model 912 started life as a type 902. A nice ’69 912 S/R coupe in Bali blue with Fuchs would be a very appropriate present – for her wedding. Let’s see; H1 headlights with 100/130 W and relays, S front bumper, Black leather interior with black/blue/white houndstooth, matching luggage, S carpets, European heaters with 911SC fan, heated rear window and windshield, 1750 cc 616/39 with 900 W alternator & Accusump, updated simplified transmission AFKQV 7:31, 911S brakes, 6x15 & 7x15 early Fuchs with 205/55x15, alloy trailing arms, 20/25 mm torsion bars, appropriate sway bars, and standard Bilsteins. Of course high on the list is chassis preservation so it will never rust. Even in LA you drive to Big Bear skiing or enjoy the sea air along the PCH. A nice new ‘69 902 to be delivered on 9/02/33. Better start soon. Of course the real Type 912 is the engine and transmission in a 917! Best, Grady

Grady...you're too funny! I'll send you an invite to the wedding!
I found the 902 gearbox in my "The Porsche Book" by Boschen & Barth. It looks like it was a 4-speed option for the 911 in 1965-1968. (p117)

Congrats!!!
Now is she going to learn to drive a 5-speed in your 911??? That is what I would call an indoctrination.

She's a darling! With a birthday like that, you know what she's gonna need for a car. A 914-6 of course!

I just got an email from her...She said she wishes we'd stop all this babble about a 911, as she would prefer the mid-engine handling characteristics of a Caymen!

I’ll be approaching the century mark and still driving my ’68 911 with its original option 902/1 5-speed. ![]() The nice thing about a 902 is the space for grand-kids seats. The 914-6 can be her track car. Of all the things we want for our children, these are the fun “thought experiments.” In reality a RIT and a diversified trust that reinvests everything is the correct path. Best, Grady
