Intermittent wiper function
I recently reversed the wipers on my 79SC so that my better half can see out the window without the wipers obstructing her view while driving. Anyway, the job went without incident, but the intermittent wiper function seemed a bit confused and the wipers wouldn't travel the same amount across the screen while in this mode. After using the intermittent wiper function and reverting to the normal wiper function the wipers would no longer park automatically. And after about a week the intermittent wiper function stopped working.
So, in normal mode, what I have to do now is be alert and turn off the wipers at the right time, because when I turn the wipers off they stop right where they are. All fuses are fine in the fusebox. Have I fried something? |
I think your reversal has nothing to do with the intermittent giving it a rest.
I assume you swapped the wipers by using the tested and tried method of changing the wiper linkage, so you actually are not interferring with the electronics. I believe the two are non related. If the intermittent switch AND the parking function give an issue then this is due to the wiper stalk on your steering column. I think the intermittent switch itself will be just fine. Remove the steering wheel, open the plastic solumn and you will find that the stalk connections will be slightly bent (if broken then your toast, sorry) causing the park function not to work or not to work all the time, clean them and bent (slowly and caerfullly inot shape). As a result of this you will now notice that once the park is working again, the intermittent switch willl have found his joy again. Good luck. Michel |
Yes, you are right I did it as described in the technical description on the Pelican site with the wiper linkage.
I'll try what you advise, but it seems a bit of an odd coincidence as prior to reversing the wiper the parking function for the wipers and the intermittent function performed flawlessly. Best regards, David |
I second Michel

During the swap from left to right you shouldn't have fried anything that caused this problem. This is just an unfortunate coincidence.

Anyway, I digress. The only thing you could have fried is the wiper motor if you would have blocked the wiper action in any way and turned on the wipers (eventually the motor burns out as there is no cut out) , but you need to be seriously technically challenged to succeed in that (or a politician for that matter). And since you said that the wipers move... Michel |
The Happy Conclusion!
As recommended by Vereeken, on the weekend,I pulled the steering wheel off, the covers away and accessed the wiper stalk and found exactly what he said I'd find! Of the 4 prongs that should be touching, 2 on each side of the plastic piece, one side was not doing that. I carefully bent it back so that it would make contact at the right time and screwed everything back together. After reconnecting the battery, I tried the wiper and it didn't show any improvement. But, the next time I tried it it did work, as does the intermittent wiper function. I believe it didn't work the first time due to the deoxidizing oil i sprayed on the prongs before putting it back together. I'm still not quite pleased with the actual parking position, but I think that is a case of a bit more adjustment of the mechanical linkage.
So...thanks for the help Vereeken!! |
