Need transmission advice

My 78Sc will not shift into 1st or 3rd gear it will go into 2nd 4th 5th and reverse .
I had pulled to a stop and was puting the car in neutral and it made a loud grinding noise it sounded like something was loose or rattling and will not shift into these gears since
I have tried adjusting the coulpler to no effect
I took off the bottom view plate on the trans to view the selector forks and see nothing unusual or metal fragments or pieces in the fluid
Any Ideas?

Does the shifter feel normal? detents feel right?
Does the trans shift into 1st or 3rd gear with the engine off.
Does the shaft move in the trans past neutral, with the coupler removed, with normal feel?(car may need to be rolled forward slowly with the clutch out to engage it )
The clutch feel correct? (adjusted right?)Was the clutch or the shifter linkage adjusted lately?

The shifter feels normal going into 2nd or reverse.
It will not shift into 1st or 3rd with engine off.
Clutch feels normal.
With the coupler removed the shaft from trans will not move towards 1st gear
I have made no adjustments I did change my gear oil about a month ago and did find what looked like syncro teeth in the plug.
It feels as if its blocked for some reason.
Regards
Jeff

My recommendation would be to buy a spare 915 with a 7:31 ring & pinion, from a '72-'74 911, or a '76 912E. If the spare is in good enough condition to use, put it in and get back to having fun ASAP! Otherwise, go through both 915's and find the 'best' 1st-3rd gears (same ratios, both versions) and use your SC's 4th and 5th gears, along with the 7:31 ring & pinion. What you will end up with is a 'shortened' SC transaxle that is a blast to drive.
