Can this be done??
 

I am just about finished with the refurb of my 73E Targa just waiting for the engine to be completed and installed (Next wek I think). I finished installing the new carpets yesterday, reinstalled the seats and for the first time since I've owned the car got behind the wheel to get a feel for what all my time and $$$ was going toward.
Now for my question! It seems that my brake pedal is too high away from the gas pedal, about 3+ inches. This doesen't comfortable or very safe. Can the brake pedal be lowered by about 1-1/2"or so? If yes,how?

If your car is the same as mine you can remove the plywood floorboard behind the pedal and you should see a linkage rod that connects the brake pedal to the master cylinder. If its like mine is should be threaded for adjustment. From there I guess it's trial and error. See what you like.

My mechanic adjusted the linkage on his SC for better heel toe action.

Assuming that you still have the original manual brakes (short rod with no pedal adjustment) and have not grafted in a power brake booster into your pre 77 car (I have seen it done). I don' think that it will be easy but it is doable. The brake rod will have to be cut (to your comfort level) and the pedal assembly would have to be nearly removed to do the rest.

The problem is that the return spring for the pedal wants to return it to the stop. Near as I can tell from the crappy haynes manual you must either shim the stop forward or the stop pin on the pedals diameter must be enlarged to stop the pedal earlier. The only other way, I guess, would be to cut the brake pedal then have a "certified welder" Mig it back together.

"Disclaimer" (being safer than I have to be) I would really let a pro do it right (the welding) or not change it at all.

Lee thanks, I'll give it a shot tonight. I may have mess the adjustment up when I rebuilt the pedal cluster. I wish I found this problem out before I installed the carpet. Oh well this isn't the first thing and won't be the last thing that I've had to take apart to redo because of something else. Thanks again, Paul
