How good is AUTOTHORITY's Mass air flow mod???

Could use some opinion's on AUTOTHORITY's mass airflow mod for the 964 3.6L motor.

The kit sells for $1800 new (insane) .... I can get a used kit for $700 but even at $700 it seems expensive if you barely feel a change.

Anybody have any experience with these...... OR would it be better to just get a 95 993 intake with a mass airflow already.

any responses apreciated
Thanks

seems crazy to me. I run my 993 engine with the airbox cover off. I use some clips to hold the filter in place, no I didn't buy that fake carbon fiber thing in excellence adds. seems to work fine like it is...

After installing an early APE MFS on my 3.2 I wasn't impressed enough to keep. I sent it back shortly after. At that time there were no alternative products.

If the cost were in the $700 range I probably would have kept.

You may want to talk to Steve Wong to see what he has to offer.

do yourself a favor and don't bother with a mass flow mod... autothority (who is no longer in business, btw) or anyone elses... they're all crap and all have their downfalls... if your ECU doesn't do mass air stock, don't do the kit

Man.... am I happy I did not pull the trigger on that set up, I didn't even know Autothority were no longer in business

Andrew- I was looking in the archives and came across (if I remember correctly) your MFS conversion on your RSA..... Did you ever get it going?

Thanks again guys.... I think I'm going to spend the cash on my mountain bike
for a change.

Just wondering.... does the MFS sharpen the throttle response much?

I have one of these on the shelf too. From what I understand, sharpened throttle responce is the ONLY benefit. A friend has one his 3.2 installed by PO and he doesn't excactly run away from me on the track. I think Steve Wong is/was developing his MAF system with a custom chip. He will burn a chip for your application, replacing the one the AutoThority unit came with.

Herman,
I managed to get the MFS working on the RSA, but after countless hours of tuning, no real gains and being seriously concerned about tracking the car with the MFS, I threw it out and installed a chip for an australian spec RS from Powerchip... I've never looked back. I had tried an autothority chip and hated it, I had a terrible idle, and the throttle response was strange, sometimes sharp, sometimes felt like I was waiting for the turbo to kick in. The powerchip is great, however.

Steve is building me a custom chip for my 87 now. It has the Autothority MAF, cat bypass, and M&K muffler - It was making 210hp at the wheels with 195ft/lbs torque on the Authority chip.
Will try to post some after Steve's chip.

.....plus you'll gain very little w/MAF on a 3.2.

BTDT, don't do it.

I didn't have it dynoed before the mods so I really don't have a reference point for stock or exhaust mods w/o MAF. Paid $800 for mine and it does seems to help throttle response.

I put one on my car... only because I got it for free. I could not tell a difference. Biggest bang for your buck is exhaust and a SW chip.

I like my MAF on the 3.2L but it came as part of the deal on the engine purchase. If you do it, I think a custom chip is a must. With the Autochip, the A/F is very rich.
Here are some dyno for my car with and without MAF. The only dyno not shown is the last tweek Steve W did on the chip. With the tweek, he was able to get a little better A/F curve.

btw, throttle response is better in my opinion.

Very interesting. If I had a 3.2 and a few thou extra, I'd look into it.

Looks like the stock air filter can be used with the SteveW unit. I'd prefer that over my AutoT MAF with cone filter. I might consider switching if the price wasn't so high.

Yeah - I have a SW chip and the 3.2 is "awakened" - plus he has tweaked my chip for me on a number of ocassions and is very knowledgable on all things DME.

I would love to see this on a dyno - before and after. $2700 for a true 15-20hp gain is cheap on these cars (other than gutting wieght wise)

My question is would that be in addition to the chip that I already have as you get a custom chip with it...
