1976 911s Rear Spoiler

I just bought a 1976 911s coupe with sunroof. The car did not have a rear spoiler. I have always liked the way the rear spoilers (whale tail) look in the 911 so I'm contemplating getting one put on. Can someone give me information as to 1) whether any of the 1976 911s coupe models were fitted with a factory rear spoilers, 2) what is an appropriate rear spoiler for this model, and 3) what would be a good place to get a used rear spoiler that I can have painted to match the car. Thanks

On a narrow body car the all fibreglass ducktail spoiler from the early Carrera 74-77 looks good, the larger carrera and turbo spoliers with the rubber lip are too wide and look out of place on the narrow body cars
Porsche started using the rubber lip spoilers on non turbo 911s in 78 which had larger rear flares

Ruben,
1)as far as I know, no factory rear spoilers were equipped with the 911S.
2)As far as this goes, I think you should put on what you like. I also have a '76 911S and I just recently put on a used 930 tail. Looks pretty good in my opinion, and keeps my engine temp low on the freeway (190F on a 30 mile drive)
3)I would check eBay, they occasionally have used spoilers. Or, you can check "Excellence" or "Panorama." There's usually people selling whaletails.

Good luck!

I recently read in some Porsche literature that if I'm to use a rear spoiler, I should also consider a front spoiler to keep the car's aerodynamics balanced. Does anyone have experience with only using a rear spoiler or should I also get one for the front? Looking forward to hearing from some of you. Thanks

I read in some Porsche literature that if one is to consider adding a rear spoiler to a 911, then one must also add a front spoiler to balance the aerodynamics. Have any of you just added a rear spoiler without a front one. What is your experience with the handling? Also, is there any particular front spoiler that I should consider. Thanks

I'm sure that you won't have anything to worry about at normal highway speeds. My car came from the factory with only the front spoiler, another 'No-No' ... but the handling never suffered one bit!

Ruben,
So far I haven't noticed anything regarding bad handling with just a rear wing...I don't have a front spoiler yet(and don't intend to get one...carrera tensioners come first). Unless you'll be doing some SERIOUS driving(like autobahn speeds) I doubt that a front spoiler will make a difference. Of course, if you've got the money, go for it. Good luck.
