Cayman...whimpy sound
Just seen a new Cayman at the dealership and must admit it looks great, and what a potential it has to be a great track car.
But my first thoughts when I heard it fired up...what a whimp sound, new VW Golf's sound better. So I asked to hear ir in the rev's and still...yuck. Guess I am just expecting some 911 music from the little hardtop boxster, and this will be good news for all the after market tuners as the exhaust upgrades will be flying off the shelves I am sure. :D |
My step dad swore that when he bought his 993 it sounded too much like his Corvair. A new exhaust took care of it. I am sure a new exhaust will cure the "whimp" sound.:D

So you only need to spend another 2-3 grand on your hardtop boxster?

Funny thing: four nights ago going home from work I got off the freeway directly behind a silver Cayman, with its distinctive hardtop, and pulled up close behind it on the offramp. The badge said "Boxster."

the Cayman offers a sport exhaust sytem option.
Maybe the one you listened to was the quiter option. I have not heard either love to compaire the two though. |
never seen that, interesting but the Cayman still has the great basic structure to be a monster on the track.

Here is the other item which may make it snap for you.

Hey, Smitty, I agree with you on the Cayman's awesome potential. It's just a matter of time. It just doesn't get any better on the track than a mid-engined flat six Porsche.
I was in a parking lot and listened to a 997 idle by and had a similar let-down experience. My 3.2 sounds so much better. Dennis |

If you want the greatest sound of all time, why not replace the engine with a 2.0 Carrera 6 engine? |
I think we all agree that the sounds from an Aircooled engine just seem better...although the Carrera GT has a note that I would love to have. I think the best sound I have heard (from a 6) is the GT3 Cup on the track.

I love my 3.4 '88, but at the DE's the Caymans sound really cool the way the spoiler 'rips' the air stream. Not sure if anyone else has heard them, but if youare standing nearby when they go past it is a unique sound.
I hear no exhaust noises from them. They seem to run well at the tracks I have seen them on. Just beware the front fender mounted cooling and any impacts with gaitors, etc. I've seen them bleeding green coolant where a 911 would have just kept going. |
