Haynes Manual
Hello,
I bought a Haynes manual for the 911, which I use to maintain my other cars, but I found the manual for the 911 disappointing. I found very little information about the specific procedures for routine procedures like changing engine and tranmission fluids, etc. The fill and drain plug locations are there, but I was hoping for some more detailed instructions. I'm sure it's straightforward, but I like to be extra careful working on my vehicles. Does anyone know of a better source for such information? The car is an 82 SC. Thanks, Olivier |

I'm gonna try to not be too unkind here because my chums point out that there is useful information in the Haynes manual. It's particularly useful for early 911 owners.
What I find is that even the later, motronic stuff is dealt with better than the SC period. Very poor for our cars. I also cannot forgive the absence of such basic things as torque values for engine mounts, transmission mounts anti-sway bar mounts and a host of other stuff. It does provide the valve clearance specification. The "real" manuals can cost hundreds and I have not sprung for them, but there are other things you can get. The "Spec Book" for our cars is apparently not available at this time. Too bad. It's cheap and packed with info, I'm told. Parts books are available which are good reading with some diagrams. Bentley (Robert ?) manuals are excellent. The one for volkswagons in the early 80s is helpful for the FI system in our cars. Warren says the Bently air-cooled vw manual is helpful, and I bet it is. Sadly, there is no reasonably priced (is under $100 too little to ask) good manual. I believe there could and should be. Warren....say you will. ------------------ '83 SC |

You can get the factory manuals on micro fische for under $45 .
You might be able to find a used micro fische reader at a thrift store or used office supply store for around $50 also |

This is true. I'd rather have the books, but the fische would be thrifty.

Bently, The outfit that does the good BMW manuals is bringing one out this Summer for the 911.
Should be good. I have them all incl. the factory one but another would be nice too. Ned Monaghan |

Will the new Bentley manual be for the new 996 version 911, or for the air cooled cars?

This is my question, too. A Bentley manual for my car sounds too good to be true.
