Educate me on clutch and pressure plate.

Looking at clutch discs, it is very obvious the tear and wear by looking at the surface condition, thickness, oil contamination, etc.

How about the pressure plate? Does it have a lifespan? How do you check its condition (life span)? When and how does it lose its 'clamping' force?

Thanks.
