'84 carrera rear shocks?

has anyone out there ever replaced their rear shocks on your '84 carrera, and is this something i should go ahead and fork over the coin for the labor? any help or experience would be appreciated.

All 911's are pretty much the same, as rear shocks go! If you know which end of a torque wrench to grab, you should be able to do it in under an hour! No special tools required.

thanks warren. other then a floor jack and stands, is there anything else i should know, or do?
i was quoted $600 this morning for two rear bilsteins shocks and labor....seems a little steep, pelican has the same pair of shocks for $217.30....he was going to charge me $209.10/ea plus the labor...and i think there are basically only two bolts per shock....thanks again for the help.

That is a pretty ridiculous price, in my opinion!!! I think I would have to recommend avoiding him in the future!

A 17 mm nut on the stud at the top of the shock, and a 22 mm nut on the bottom ... getting at the top nut may be a little cramped because of the Motronic's ... but definitely not worth $400!!!

I checked the local porsche dealer/service in my local area (Michigan) and was quoted $230.00 each for rear shocks. I got both shocks from Pelican for less than one shock at the dealer... Labor was $85.00 per hour, and was a two hour estimate per side.... for that kind of money I will figure it out myself...

Thats very typical of repair shops, I really despise them they give you the hard sell that you need an advanced engineering degree along with factory Porsche training to work on these cars. Freakin scammers!
I recently was quoted 450.00 to remove my oil light sender at the back of my motor ,it took me 40 minutes to do it myself
The same is true for my trans rebuild they start at 1200.00 for basics such as syncros only (which GPR sells a complete set for 120.00)and go up from there I know with my trans it would be around 2500-3000+ by the time I would be out of there I estimate at the max my parts will cost me 700.00 thats if i have a lot of damage
No wonder why the prominent local Porsche repair shop owner here in Vegas
(Carls Place) has a 97 993 Twin Turbo a real 56 Speedster for his wife along with other Porsches

well, here's the skinny...i found the shocks at zims for $233/pr....and upon quizzing this guys labor cost over at autoscope, he double checked and then reported that he had made the mistake of quoting me a rear shock job for a '94 911, not an '84....this brought the labor price down from close to three bills to only $71.00 for both sides...go figure.
