Stinky 1988 3.2

I'm getting this fowl smell almost like rotten eggs after driving hard seems to be comming from the exhaust(the car not mine ok). I have a feeling I'm going to really regret this question.

I read an article about this somewhere but I cant remember where. I will try to find it for you. I can't remember the problem/solution but I don't think it was all that bad...

If it smells like eggs I thing it is the catalytic converter.

Boiled battery acid!!! See your 'shorting' question for details!

Catalytic converters smell like this sometimes. I think it is when the mixture is too rich.

I concur, battry acid caused by your alternator not functioning properly. Get your alternator checked pronto, tha acid is dangerous to you and the car.

I gott go w/ the mixture crowd on this one. If it happens after running hard, and it smells like it is coming from the exhaust, then it probably is. I've seen this from too lean and too rich (depending on the car and how the computer compensates). You didn't mention what year car.. CIS or Motronic?
Could also be crappy fuel, try some Techralon also. (chevron makes it)

just saw the year in the header.. probably rich, I think.. When I got my 87, I had to take off the AirFlowMeter and clean it w/ carb cleaner, the flapper door was sticking a bit. Also, check your air filter. Finally, you might try a BURSCH test pipe in place of the converter. (just to see "of course")

I'll go with the Cat. They really do stink just like rotten eggs, and you can usually smell other cars when you follow them. We get this a LOT on our side of the world- it's very distinctive. Mostly because our highways are clogged up with badly maintained Japanese imports (we import more of these half worn out toxic dumps than we do new cars). I may be wrong, but I doubt very much if a battery problem would make the exhaust smell at all- they are at opposite ends of the car after all.

Guys ... I know what cat. converters smell like, rich or otherwise, BUT, the smell wasn't the only symptom ... an eratic, drastic fluctuation in headlamp brightness, described as a 'short' was also present!!! Fluctuations in battery voltage and sulphur smell leads one in only ONE direction ... towards a questionable ALTERNATOR!!!

Hey! That's cheating Warren! All the information we got was that it was a smelly exhaust. I'll concede.

Well, I will grant you it would have been a bit easier if all of the problems had been stated in one post rather than two ... but at least they were sequentially posted early this morning ...
