I've got a '78 RoW SC that has been my daily driver for almost two years. I'm coming up on valve adjustment time and I think I'll turn it into a larger project.

I think I'll drop the engine/tranny. I have not dropped an engine out of anything since my second '70 VW Bug about 15-20 years ago so this should be fun.

so here is the reason for this thread....

1. While I have the engine and transmission out, what low cost upgrades or maintenance should I do?

2. Is there anyone out there in the Daytona Beach, FL area that would be willing to lend a hand if I get stuck?

Replace the clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing, any oil seal between the engine and trans and perhaps the trans seals.

Clean up the entire engine compartment, replace the sound pad, all vacuum hoses and soft fuel lines and clamps... Replace the heater hoses, repack the CV joints, new gaskets, grease, bolts, etc...

Cleanup is the biggest thing. I did it last winter; the job sucked but now it's nice. Replace the oil pressure sender and the stuff mentioned above. I also installed new chain cover gaskets, which would be difficult to do with engine in the car.

Thanks to all! I am hesitant to touch any gaskets as the engine doesn't leak a drop now. I will do the clean up and replace hoses, clamps and sender. I also have a sound pad that is waiting for installation.

I hadn't thought of the CVs. That is a great idea. Cost will be the determining factor on the clutch.

You mean the oil pressure switch on top of the engine, NOT the sender that is next to the temp switch to the bottop-right of the fan.
Oil pressure sender is for indicating pressure.
" " switch is for the idiot light.

Adjust the valves while the engine is out and replace the gaskets with the silicone type and new lock nuts.

Yeah, the op switch for the warning light for sure. Thanks Gunter. Although the pressure sender is also more easily accessible with the engine out; if you are having trouble with it. I have replaced mine twice now in 10 years. BTW, you want to be absolutely sure the cam oil line, op sender fittings are tight. I learned the hard way on that one.

if your engine is out, why not do the clean-up?

i am replacing my engine and the clean up was one of my projects.. and afew pictures.... i went to black and it looks pretty good.
