Importing and Customs

I am looking to have an engine shipped to me from Germany. Has anyone out there had any experience with doing this? I'm new to the importing/exporting world, and don't want to have anything impounded by customs.

Jack, its a can of worms, but in your case very simple. If the engine were in pieces, it comes in classified as parts, and no epa papers. If the engine is whole, and new enough to be covered by the clean air act, then the clause that you have to sign is that it will not be used in a vehicle covered by the clean air act standards. If they figure you defrauded them, then the fines according to a few year old pamphlet says it could be $25k per day max! Check with epa for the latest. Cars over 25 years old were exempt the last time I looked

Thanks! It's for a 27-year-old car, which is completely smog exempt in California, at least. I'll keep digging.
