How to tell when clutch is about to fail??
 

I have an 88 Carrera with 95,000 miles and the original clutch. How does one tell when it is about to fail? There is 'scuffing' noise coming from the transmission that has me worried. Has anyone replaced a G50 clutch lately? What was the cost? Thanks!

In my experience, a clutch that is 'worn out,' below or at the factory specified minimumn thickness for the disk ... will slip in 4th or 5th gear. At some speed you will not be able to go faster, but engine rpm's will rise while road speed stays constant. That is my 'classic' example of a clutch at the end of its' useful life ...

one way to sort of tell, but probably is not recommended by many people is to have the car in fifth gear while stopped. have the parking brake on as high as you can pull up, rev engine to about 3500 and keep foot on accelerator...then release the clutch....sort of quickly...and if engine dies then clutch is still good, if it slips, then it is time to be replaced.
I haven't done this in a Porsche, only seen it done in Acuras...so, i don't know if it is the best way to check.
