May I ask a question about "Off Road" light?
I know people been telling Hella H4 is the best for the money but I can't find one that is 6" x 4". I have a question on the below lights.
When the light said "Off Road", does it mean it definitely brighter, and more visibility then the one said "Headlamp"? I am trying to compare between the 2 lights below for my headlights. Both are using H4 bulbs. I like the look of the clear lenses one better and think it might be brighter but it said "Headlamp" while other one said "Off Road" (not clear lense). Does anyone know if the "Off Road" (not clear lenses) is better? http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2003804/c-10101/Nty-1/p-2003804/Ntx-mode+matchallpartial/N-10101/tf-Browse/s-10101/Ntk-AllTextSearchGroup?Ntt=headlight http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2003805/c-10101/Nty-1/p-2003805/Ntx-mode+matchallpartial/N-10101/tf-Browse/s-10101/Ntk-AllTextSearchGroup?Ntt=headlight

- probably -- if it says off-road use only then it is so bright that the law won't allow it on public streets be prepared to have other Californians shoot at you if you use them - esp. in SoCal.

"Off road" usually translates as "not DOT approved". They may be blazingly bright with a wonderful pattern or 2 candlepower and dip to the left.

umm... let me go off topic a bit since randy just reminded me. Nowaday, almost everytime I take my car out at night I wanted to shoot someone. There are so many of guys lift their headlight pointed to the sky. Some of them don't even shine to the road surface at all. Instead, it shine right into my eyes. Most of them drive like a dick. I hate them.
Now let me ask this question. If my lights are "wayyyy too bright but I aim them correctly, then it should be ok right? When I say ok, I mean it won't blind people. If I get off-road lights for my headlights and aim them correctly not to blind people, will other (police) know I am using not DOT approve lights by just looking at the beam? The reason I want bright light so much is because my eyes are not very good at night. tctnd, I think I understand when you said "blazingly bright with a wonderful pattern" but I don't understand when you said "2 candlepower and dip to the left". Could someone please explain. English is still my second language. Between the 2 above and this one below, which one sould you guys choose and why? Thanks much. http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/ItemBrowse/c-10111/s-10101/p-100000165789/mediaCode-ZX/appId-100000165789/Pr-p_CATENTRY_ID:100000165789 Thank you.

check out IFP. They are, I think, an australian CO. Many years ago, you can get Hella replacment head lamps that say off road on the box. They were just a European replacment lamp that were not DOT approved. Just like the H4s for our cars. Can't find Hellas like that anymore. IPF is the next best thing. Not cheap. I have then in 2 of my older trucks and they work great. Aim them like normal, you should be ok. Just don't put 100w bulbs in there, you'll be fine. Cops have never said anything to me.

6.5x4 H4 lights aren't hard to find.
These two places sell decent parts. http://www.danielsternlighting.com/products/products.html http://www.rallylights.com/hella/headlamps.asp

Cibie, IMHO are a better quality glass and over all product than the Hella's.

RNIN, I'm being a bit facecious here but candlepower is a measure of brightness and two candlepower would be extremly dim. When headlights dip (to low beam) they dip to the right in most of the world, where we drive on the right (to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic) and to the left in England, Australia, Fiji, and other remanents of the British empire. If a car is imported from or exported to one of these countries a headlight change is necessary. regards, Phil |
