I was mugged by a deer this morning

Oh man,

I am bummed/angry about this. I know I'm lucky I didn't get hurt. It's just been one thing after another lately and now this. The poor deer died instantly or within a few moments. As you can see from the pics, it scared the poop out of him all over the hood and windshield.

Now, I'll have to fight with the insurance company over where to take it, how much, etc...

Anyway, just airing my frustrations to a bunch of guys that understand.

Here are the pics:

I HATE those road goats; it's harvest time in the Midwest and they are being flushed out of the fields and onto the highways, making driving at dusk a roll of the dice - you'll never stop in time. Sorry for your loss, hope the claim covers the damage.

Regards,

Ouch. Hopefully it'll be fixed up and back on the road soon.

I'm paranoid about the deer around here. I've had numerous close calls already...

After years (not saying how many), I encountered a suicidal deer this spring. Fortunately not with the P-car, but this was one of those "barely saw it coming, just enough time to get out the first part of "oh s**t" before it hit the front of the car.

Your insurance company should treat it as a comprehensive claim, not a collision claim (you may have a lower deductible on comp claims and it shouldn't count against your record--they view it as an act of God or hail damage; wrong place at the wrong time).

I think if the air bags had gone off, the car would have been totalled. As it was, a month and $6000 later, I was "whole" again.

Good luck.

Bummer.

This morning, just a couple hundred yards from my driveway, I saw green eyes reflecting from my headlights, alerting me to the doe in the middle of the road.

I was lucky.

I hit the brakes, she hit the woods.

It's the highway department's fault. They keep putting up those deer crossing signs, and then the deer cross and get hit. I say they ban all deer crossing signs so the deer will stay off the darned highways!

Sorry about having some fun with this but sometimes I try to find humor to disguise other emotions that are not as much fun. I hope you get your P-car fixed with minimal hassle and time so you can get back to enjoying it.

PS to Wayne...the September 2006 Ventura show is a past event. May not need to advertise it any more?

It looks like the deer did you a favor. What I mean is, you get a free paint job out of this, so look at this as an opportunity.

Exactly. Sorry to see you go thru it tho. Some like deer whistles - no real evidence pro or con on that one.

FWIW, a deer crashes a high school track meet in Bend (high desert/juniper part of Oregon) last week and after getting petted by the kids started licking slat off of their skin (runners sweat). Then it decided to follow one kid and 'chased' him for a few minutes. At one point it jumped up on him with its front legs on his shoulders - he got pretty perturbed - looked like a young deer to me. So it may not have have wanted to spear him with its hooves but there was still a chance that some disease infected fleas, etc. jump off and bite him. The deer got relocated into a wilderness area.

I understand your frustration completely, and I'm glad you are ok.

When I moved to Colorado from CA, I used to go on deer sight-seeing trips around town. The novelty was short lived, I can't stand em now.

My wife creamed one with my truck, and I've had several near misses myself.

A famous Pike's Peak hill climb driver got killed awhile back, practicing on some mountain roads. I like the wildlife around here, except the deer.

Be aware that the majority of deer hits occur during rutting season, which is the fall. (This is not just conjecture--it's statistically proven.)

As for deer whistles, I did a test that I wrote about in Popular Science, of some "expensive" (like $60) powered deer whistles, not just the ones that supposedly sound as a result of airflow. Installed the thing, wired it up, and went out and found some deer. Which is very easy to do here in the Hudson River Valley; in fact we live a quarter-mile from something aptly named Deer Hill Road.

Anyway, saw three deer grazing by the side of the road and very slowly coasted up to within about 20 feet of them--pretty easy to do, since they're just about tame around here. I'd installed an on/off switch on the "deer whistle," sp I stopped the car, waited a moment until they totally ignored me, and switched it on, to produce a sound that, if you believe the ads, turns their brains to jelly and sends them fleeing into the next parish.

Nothing. I might just as well have mooned them, for all the good it did.

I interviewed several body-shop owners, police chiefs, veternarians and insurance agents for the piece as well. They all said that in their experience, the deer whistles are worthless.
