Right side o' the bay - AC
Please forgive my ignorance... there are two rubber hoses connected to the AC compressor on my Carrera. I would like to disconnect them to make room for my 10 thumbs to work their magic on intake valves 4-6.
Is there any issue here? Are these air hoses or do they contain oil (strange)? Please take a look at this pic to confirm what I am talking about: http://www.rogerplacer.net/911/AC2.JPG Thanks! Roger ------------------ '85 Carrera 3.2 coupe Guards Red/Black Leather http://www.rogerplacer.net/911/ |

Roger,
the hoses can be left on, just disconnect the compressor and kind of hang it over to the side. |

Well, assuming you are talking about a system still operating on R-12, I think the 'issue' would be whether it is worth a $300 repair bill to refill your system! Those hoses 'contain' R-12 and a certain amount of refrigeration oil, and removing the hoses will release all of your R-12 into the atmosphere!!! It's your choice, but it looks to me as though you COULD unbolt the compressor from it's mount and swing it over to rest on the induction plenum while you adjust #4, #5, and #6 intake valves!

In addition to Warrens post by opening your A/C system even for a few minutes your receiver/dryer will be destroyed -
add another $120.00 for this They return to a powder while absorbing all the moisture out of the air PS That doesn't look like a Porsche or Mahle oil filter (they are black) I'd recommend replacing it with one as they have the proper check bypass valve set to POrsche specs. Thanks for the replies; this is exactly why I asked! Thing is, I thought taking hoses away would be easier than removing the compressor, since it has the belt attached to it and all. I seem to be the only one afraid of this, so it's obviously my ignorance!
As for the oil filter, you're right - it's a replacement made by Wix. I have a Mahle sitting in my cabinet awaiting the next change. ------------------ Roger '85 Carrera 3.2 Coupe aka "Sputterbug" http://www.rogerplacer.net/911/ |

Roger,
Don't forget to loosen the belt tensioner (on the slide plate it is the one with the jam nut ) so you can release the belt tension. This will make the R & R of the compressor easier. Good luck! s |

Thanks H20,
There are some good instructions for removing the compressor in the "Engine Drop" article here on the Pelican site. Enough babble from me; when my valve cover gasket set and feeler gauge arrive, I'm off to a valve clearance adjustment.
