targa window regulators

My driver side window fell into the door with a loud thud yesterday. It's an 83 SC. I know that later window regulators will allow the window to retract all the way down so this is a good time to fix this problem. The question is, what later model regulators to acquire. I assume that 1989 would be the latest that would fit, but are they all pretty much the same from some year, like 84 or 85, all the way to 89, or is this a situation where you buy the latest model regulators you can get?
If I replace the regulators, do I have to replace the motors or other parts? I'm guessing it would be easier to just replace the glass rather than try to swap the brackets on the bottom of the glass.
Will I have to modify anything on the door or the regulator to make everything fit properly?

Anything else I should know?

I guess my window when down does stick up 1/16th of an inch or so towards the front. Is that what you mean? It sounds like your window is just off the track. Pull the door panel and check it out.

Yes, older Targa door windows did not roll down all the way. I'm not sure what year that was fixed, but it was after 83. Mine stick up more than 1/16.

I will be pulling the door panel before doing anything else, to see whats in there. I also have had all the channels and other weather strips for some time, so I'll be replacing all that too.

It is very possible that your pivot pin failed. This is a $33 part and you can replace it yourself in an afternoon. Do a search here with the terms window regulator pivot pin to get the info you need.

Basically, you remove the regulator from the door (leave the glass and it's mount alone), replace the pin and reinstall.

My passenger window when down does stick up 1/2 or so! I hadn't noticed before. So with my drivers side being so much lower, maybe there is some adjustment possible, without changing out the regulators.

Keith,

This is the situation I had before my window fell into the door, the passerger side was up 1/2 or so and the drivers side was not. It used to be above the sill, and I wondered why it no longer was. I think I know now.
