Hi guys I am new here! bought 89 911 and having trouble

I recently purschased a 1989 911 targa and I am having fun with it. It is nice to drive and fairly uick with the 3.2 and I like the wide rear wheels.

The problem seems to be that when I am cruising along in 5th gear and give it some throttle and suddenly back off, the gear lever always seems to pop out of gear. This only happens in 5th gear and all the rest are fine.

The clutch still feels good and other than that there is no noticable problem. What could this be?

I would start with the adjustment for the shift linkage. You also want to check the bushings that are used in the shift linkage.
There a previous posts on this list that you can search in regards to this type of problem. I also think there is a Tech article on this Website that gives details on how to adjust the shift linkage. You might also want to double check the clutch adjustment and in the near future change your gear oil. Many have switched to Swepco gear oil and found improved feel and performance from the gearbox.

Good Luck
