Rocker Shaft Leaks

I recently finished rebuilding my engine on my 82 911 SC, my machinist polished and inspected the rocker shafts and I installed them at the factory spec ~13.2 ftlbs. Since several are leaking can I just tighten to a higher spec or do I need to remove and repolish etc?

I torqued mine to 18ft lbs and have had no problems. The reason I did is that in another thread about this John Walker recommends the above torque. So yes I would go ahead and tighten them up. Do a search on this in the engine rebuild forum, there are numerous threads talking about this.

Twist 'em tighter. You can also consider adding RSR seals which were not used from factory, but were a racing option.

Tighen them first and see what happens. If the leaks stop, great, if not, pull them out. It can be done with the motor in the car, not easy, but it can be done.

Cheers

I had a similar problem after doing the guides on my Carrera.

First, I tightened the shaft and that reduced the drip rate. Since the leak was from #5 exhaust and was dripping on the SSI I could still smell it so better was not good enough.

Next I put #5 on TDC, removed the assembly and cleaned and polished the rocker bore and the shaft.

I reasssembled with the bolt in the other direction, checked my clearance which did not change and lived happily ever after.

There was a little mysterious copper color transfer from the bushing to the shaft. Only visible, not feelable.

Ant ideas on this color?
