Front engine ( at trans) mounts

Friend is removing and re-installing the engine in his late 70's 911 ( 77 Targa). I believe the forward mounts are fairly common and unchanged for a number of model years through the late 80's.

Anyway..he's not sure if the front receivers ( "bosses" ) are buggered-up from a PO's attempt at doing the same thing. What are the consequences and suitable remedies of a buggered-up front mounting boss where the mounting bolts thread-in ???

I had this problem a few years ago. My solution was to buy new bolts and install them. They went in better than the "buggered" up bolts so that was the extent of my fix. I suppose you could run a tap up into the treads as well. I wouldn't want to have to try to replace that part.

Thanks.

Still....I'll bump this....

...I guess the question was more along the lines of buggered-up receiver threads. If so...then what are the options ???

I'd start with running a thread chaser/cleaner in then go with the new bolts. The chasers are not the same as taps in that they dont cut, but clean the threads.

Wil,

If the threads really are buggered up, it is likely only at the very start of the threads, so I imagine if you just ran a tap through it would clean it up sufficiently, and there would still be plenty of strength left. They are large bolts w/ lots of thread area.

As an aside, when I was reinstalling my engine and tranny, I found those bolts were very difficult to get started. It was the only 'hitch' I encountered. The problem is that the rubber mounts may not line up properly as you try to put the bolts in. I found I had to use a transmission jack on the front of the tranny to push the mounts against the chassis quite firmly, allowing the rubber mounts to deflect a bit so that the holes were co-axial. Then I was able to start the bolts (probably w/ slightly buggered threads) much easier.
