For those that have installed a CDR 210 or 220....a question
I'm considering installing a CDR 210 in my 84. For those of you that have done this upgrade (or the 220), what did you do for the "car side" wiring harness? The radios that I've seen don't have the "car side" of the harness, and I'm sure the existing Blaupunkt harness is not compatible.
Thanks much. |

Don't have the radio yet, so I can't post a picture. I'm trying to figure out how it will connect into the existing wires.

Shouldn't be too tricky, most head units are pretty simple. Is the CDR a Blaupunkt unit? I installed a Blaupunkt RPD550 into my 72 a couple of years back, much more straightforward than I expected.

No...the CDR units are Porsche OEM radios manufactured by Becker.

Scott - I installed the CDR 210 in my '87. The previous owner had replaced the original stereo with some god awful disco light flashing unit. So the factory harness had been hacked. I called SW Stereo, and he sent me a new harness to plug into the back of the becker unit, in fact i bought 2 harnesses, one power and the other for the speakers. I think the total was less than $15 . SW stereo can be found online.
I hope this helps Matt |
I have done this upgrade just this weekend. You need the harness as previously mentioned. I got mine from Becker USA. I tried as much as possible to keep the factory connectors intact but had a hard time locating female DIN 2 pin speaker connectors for the Becker harness (it comes with bare ends). You just need some male spade connectors, one very small one. With that, the orignal car side of the harness will remain intact. I suppose I could just cut them off but I wanted the keep things "original".
One thing I was wondering is what to do with the extra connector for the antenna. I think that this is for power to the antenna amplifier. I probably should be spliced into the switched hot connection (terminal 15?). Lawrence |
Lawrence, Crutchfield has the din speaker connectors.

I love that site. Too bad they don't deliver to Canada. I found some on ebay, in the UK! Might take a few more days.

sw stereo. real helpful, You will want to send the faceplate to becker and have them change background color of the faceplate so you can see it. Just ask for the upgraded faceplate. I also installed the oem amp with the unit also. Jim

Buttjoint: What's the story on the faceplate? Can you give me more information?
Matt: Thanks for the info. Did you have to do anything with your faceplate? |
Scottb - I didn't have to do anything with the display/faceplate of the 210, it can be used in your car. The problem with the 220 is that if used in pre 996/boxster you cannot read the display, because this unit was designed to be viewed from a different angle, its positon is different to our cars. The fix can be made by sending the removeable display to Becker who will then return a euro spec display, which has the lcd reversed, this then can be seen in pre 996.
I' m not sure if I explained very well!!!!! Matt |
Thanks, Matt.

What matt said. You just send yours to becker and they exchange it for the updated version and send it back to ya.
