Jacking car - one side at a time
 

I normally jack up my 911 one side at a time. I then put the jackstands under the car, move to the other side and jack it up. Do you think that I can hurt the car this way? I am not worried about it falling off the stands as I have checked and double checked this. Thanks!

I have been doing the same thing for 22.5 years, and the only damage so far was some scraped undercoating on one of the torsion bar tubes when I neglected to put cushioning material on the jack stand center support! I recommend raising the car no more than 3" at a time on each side, so there won't be any tendency to slide off the jack stands. I use a 'jack plate' adapter that fits in the factory jack socket.

Thanks Warren. I feel better that you do the same. I use the jack plates also. If I only had two floor jacks...

are these 'jack plate adaptors' an item that can be purchased at any auto parts store, or are they porsche-specific?

As far as I know they are Porsche specific. They cost about $20.00 from any parts house, Pelican, Performance, Tweeks, etc..

They fit perfectly into the factory jack tubes.

Hmmm...I put my car up on two jackstands under the torsion bar tubes with no cushion. Is that OK?

Gentlemen might I suggest an alternative method? I lift the rear using a wood block between jackplate and the small square casting near front/center of the engine. then simply slip two jack stands in under the jacking points, remember this is a 964(no jack tubes). then with all this weight "balanced over the rear" lifting the front is as simple as jacking from one side and slipping j-stands under the front cross member casting. these cars are amazingly stiff, I couldn't image doing this to my chey lumnia, can you say noodle?

Mark, there probably isn't a problem, after all, the dealer lifts don't have any padding ... it is a matter of how 'fine' a control you have on the release of your floor jack. I had been using my jack stands for a couple years when the damage to my undercoating occured, and the jack just 'got away from me' ... dropping too quickly and the 'hard landing' on the jack stand resulted!
