early 911 wheel and horn

Guys,

I just got this off ebay to replace the wooden monstrosity in my car...

Having never had one of those before, I am not sure the horn pad operates as it should... I can press on one side of the pad and it pretty much "raises" the other side, like it's articulated from the center. If there was a spring there, it's not springing much anymore. Are you supposed to operate this by pushing on the center, or on either side? How do you remove the entire horn button pad to check the spring ? I don't see any wires or tabs to connect wires...

Thanks !

To remove the horn pad, turn 1/4 turn counter clockwise and lift off. There is supposed to be a rubber boot in the centerof the horn pad but these are often missing. New ones can be purchased. There is a spring pin that fits through the steering wheel and touches the ground strap on the steering column. When you press the horn, this switch completes the horn circuit and blows the horn. The horm should work whenever you push the horn pad in either from the center or ends but it may not work that good. Mine works consistently with a center push. Probably my switch is wearing out. Hope this helps.

greg,

here is a shot of the back of the pad, with the rubber center support, you also need a spring and the horn ring contact pin. here is a link the the parts on ebay, but i'm sure our host can get them also.

It's defective and can't be fixed. I'll give you $20.00 you pay shipping. Better yet your in Tampa I'll pick it up. If that's the one I was bidding on it's an excellent wheel. Happy motoring.

No, Platinum (light gold metallic). But it's been in the shop a lot lately. You might have seen me in the grey boxster or a 73.5 brown 911T in the past !

I see a yellow SC on I4 now and then !

It's a bunch of race cars from the Amalfi racing collection and the Collier collection. Off hand, there will be an RSK, 917 Can am, 962C, 908, 910, 911RSR - and that is just the ones on the poster ;-)

And it's free !!! They'll be at the amphitheater close to the lake.
