tubular front end
so i was looking at my rusty front end and a friend came over and said "thats too rusty, stop fixing it and just do a tubular front". i recalled pics i had saved from a few months back when i wa contemplating doing this. i know im gonna spend hours in there getting layers and layers of paint off then prepping the metal, bla bla bla. i would rather my time be spent doing something more radical than restoring the rusty tub. plus, i believe upgrading to coilovers later on would be easier if i had no confines and so would sway bar upgrades, etc. this is just going to be a street car occasional track. im looking for light!
so here are some questions. 1. what would the weight tradeoff be? this dude said it would be lighter after its all done than the stock front end, i just dont see that happening. cromoly or not. 2. whose pics are these!! i want more!

It looks like the only really challenging part would be properly locating all of the suspension pick-up points. But it seems like a lot of work for a street car, I would think it would be easier to find one of the tubs in the classified section and get what you need off of it.

hey thanks for the reply, i dont really need anything, and my tub isnt that bad. just thinking it would be an upgrade instead of working on the old stuff. i have plenty of time before spring to work on it. plus it doesnt look that hard
my main question is the weight.

I believe that picture was taken at Carolina Speedwerks (or Speedwerks, currently)

Dean, That's Dave from speedwerks in the background. He doesn't have a website or anything. I'll ask him the next time I talk to him. He has built several tube frame cars and we're are currently working on a wishbone suspension on one of his 914-6s. My guess would be slightly lighter than stock, maybe 100 lbs. Partially because of losing the undercoating and using aluminum where possible.

You might buy a bunch of CF bike tubes and joints and play with those.
All this is just for fun - it's way outa whack to do this on a street car.
