First engine pull on 3.3 Turbo, questions
First it seems I have blown out seal behind flywheel, bummer, my book says to pull engine and trans. same time, no way to pull just the engine?I take it not enough room to move engine back, so that the spline would not clear. Any helpfull hints, or anything to be aware of that the factory book fails to mention?

Greg, it's just much easier to pull the whole thing and much easier to mate the transmission input shaft back to the engine when it's on the ground. Just make sure you have the right spline bit(and a spare is nice) for the cv joints.

Thanks Mike, the more I get to looking at it, and reading the factory manual, it looks a lot easier doing them both It's amazing how much they put in such a small area. One more question, I have modified a motorcycle jack so that it sits better on the casing, what about the balance point engine and trans, or does the nose of trans stay up as you are lowering engine? At least that is what the pic. is showing, but I am reading about it first, then I will get under car with book to get a better understanding

i leave the trans in, but turbo release forks take a lot more care to get them realigned into the throwout bearing than with a regular 911. the engine does clear fine. disconnect the shift coupler in the tunnel if you leave the trans in.

so it doesn't bend or break the shift rod or the nose cone of the trans. the trans hangs down when the engine is out or lowered and bad things can happen if you don't undo the coupler. remove the allen screw and slide it off the transmission's shift rod.
getting the release fork into position behind the ears of the t/o bearing when the engine and trans is mated is the only thing that is a bit touchy. you need a mirror and flashlight to look thru the hole on top of the bellhousing (look from above, not from below) to get the fork positioned. the t/o bearing can rotate if you're not careful and the fork will miss the ears. |
