smog pump ?
Heading out to look at a '79 for purchase. Smog pump missing, but passes Cali smog on numbers. Guy claims the car is a Row car. I suppose my question is....
Do the 78-79 Row cars have air injection ports in the heads, and also have heard those two years came with smog pumps on euro version from the factory. Car is from Canada originally and I am skeptical of it being a Row car as it does not have the physical telltale signs( side markers, small impact bumbers ). Thanks

If it's gray market or modified, I think it's gotta have an exemption sticker on it from a test-only station inspector which will list all the emmisions equipment for the smog-shop tech.
No sticker and you might be looking at no registration and stuck with the joy of finding and back-dating with OEM equipment. People should not throw away emmisions equipment, even theough it's common practice.

ROW Cars
Check the serial number. That will tell the story. I believe Canadian cars were ROW cars. There are some threads that deal with this topic.

There are 2 parts to passing smog in CA. Obveously, the numbers, it has to run clean enough to pass. The second part is the visual. Even if the cars numbers are good without the smaog pump installed, you won't pass.
Also, under the smog pump you will need to have the "air injection tree" a bunch of pipes that lead to air injectors. Make sure its there or you might have to hunt one down and insall it, not fun. I have the exact same car by the way. |

I bought my '77 from out of state and the PO's had thrown away all the smog equipment. Gerard is right, you have to pass the visual check as well as the numerical. Depending on your address you might also need to pass a rolling dyno test which is harder without all the equipment.
I rounded up all the missing stuff and installed it for the test. The hardest item was the EGR valve because CA does a specific test for this. They apply vacuum to the EGR valve and if your engine doesn't stumble due to the leaner mixture, you fail. It's a sticky wicket in CA as you know and it's possible to really get stuck. The seller is legally responsible for the smog cert - so if he says it's legal, have him produce the document. If you go ahead and want some of the smog parts, I ended up with a spare air pump, brackets and spyder manifold that I plan to sell. Let me know. Ron
