Quick Fuchs make-over, and paint question.
Some photos of my sunday afternoon project, a quick Fuchs make-over...

Very nice job. I think if you shot it with clear, it would darken the silver. At least that's been my experience. I hav ebeen trying to picture my '83 SC with that color scheme for the wheels. I just haven't made the job to actually painting the wheels.

Looks great! I agree, I wouldn't clear the silver. IMO, I'd rather 'touch up' the silver every so often than have it darker.
Any pics of the whole car with the painted petals? I'd really like to see it... ![]() Mike

Those look great. The other guys are right - if you clear coat yes it will protect and provide some gloss, but will dull the silver. I'm redoing some BMW wheels now, and didn't clear them last time and the silver definitely had pop, but I'm going to clear them this time as I don't want to do them again in 3 years.

Nice job!! I used a clear coat on my wheels but both products were from Dupli-Color and it didn't dull the paint. They have a nice smooth finish on them.
What is the pickup looking vehicle in the background of the second 911 picture? That is too cool.

Hi Wayne, that "pickup looking" thing is what we call a "Ute" down here in OZ. (Short for utility vehicle, rhymes with boot). It is standard transportation for anyone in the bush, and for "tradies" in the city (plumbers, electricians etc).
Utes mostly have big V8 engines and bumber stickers your mother would not approve of. Mecca for utes is the annual muster at "Deni" http://www.deniu****ster.com.au/ The ultimate ute is the HSV Maloo, it has a 6 liter V8 putting out 300kw http://www.hsv.com.au/cars/vz/main.asp?link=main/maloo.html (Holden is what GM is called in OZ, HSV is Holden Special Vehicles) Cheers, Sam |

I thought so. I have seen one at a Delphi plant here in Michigan. They should bring that over here. Great alternative to an SUV.

Now you have me thinking of doing the same to my SC's wheels. One question though, how did you determine where to paint the petals? I mean, I noticed that you didn't mask off where the petal meets the flat portion of the wheel, you sort of went half way up.

Just looking at the after picture again... and thinking should I get rid of the black stone-gaurds in-front of the rear wheels? Those things look bad-ass on a wide-body, but are they needed on a narrow body SC?
S2GART, I settled on painting sliver from about half way between the flat part of the wheel (where the lug-nuts are) and the top of the "petals". This is not very exact, but after looking at lots of photos of various polished, painted and anodised fuchs, I noticed that each set is a bit different from the next anyway. My understanding is that when fuchs first started coming from the factory they were clear anodised and then dipped in black paint deep enough to cover the lug-nut area but not deep enough to cover the petals. So the exact location of the paint line differed a bit from wheel to wheel, and even from one side of a wheel to the other. I basically just masked up by eye, then checked some distances with a length of string to make sure each petals was masked roughly the same. dentist90, my plan at this point is to wait a few weeks for all the solvents to evaporate out of the paint, then apply some canuba wax for a bit of protection. I'll post back and let you know how it stands up. I'm not too worried, this is a car that has been driven for enjoyment for 20+ years, so it has its share of stone chips and scuff marks, a few battle scars don't bother me. |
