Relative engine weights
 

Since I'm swapping a 3.6 engine for a 2.2, I was curious about the relative weights of the two engines. After asking a lot of rebuilders, etc., on the web, I got one answer -- from Paul Weir in Seattle. They told me the 2.2 from a 1970 911 weighed 387 pounds, and that a 3.6 from a 1993 C2 weighed 400 pounds. Weir himself had looked it up, I was told, but I actually spoke with another one of the guys who worked there. I didn't want to question what they were telling me since they had done me the favor of looking it up, but... is this possible? Transaxles aside, could the twice-as-powerful 90s engine have gained just 13 pounds on the earlier model?

I don't want to in any way slight the reputation of Paul Weir's company. They were polite and generous in responding to my question at all. But maybe they misunderstood what I was looking for, or I somehow heard it wrong.

Or, possibly, Porsche made a very light NA six-cylinder engine in 1993.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Jack, I think he is mistaken. A fully dressed 3.6 should weigh in at around 500 pounds. An SC with air will run into the high 400's (around 480) and a 3.3Turbo comes in at a shockbusting 530 pounds. Keep in mind all of these weights are STOCK. That means heavy everything. If you strip the 3.6 and add webers and SSIs it will loose around 100 pounds. No kidding! I weighed my 930 on a drum scale and I plan to weigh my 3L w/SSIs when it is removed. I don't like guessing.

EDIT - you can't use SSIs with a 3.6, I should have said B&B.

Some numbers:

According to the 1972-73 spec book, the weight of a stock 2.4 litre engine "complete without oil" is 183Kg or 403lbs.

Unfortunately, they don't specify what that includes - I would assume the exhaust system and induction is included.

The "E" "S" and Carrera versions are about 2 lbs less.

Now all we need is a few people with spec books for their cars and we can get real data.

The '74 spec. book also shows 182 kg or 401 lb for the 2.7 CIS engines ... a bit suspicious, to me!

The 3.0 SC engine would have to weigh at LEAST 22 lb more than the '75 2.7, just because the Aluminum crankcase weighs that much MORE than the Magnesium version, though I don't have the '75 figure!
