Warning light on in dash '81 911SC

The light between the Tach and the Speedo is on on my 81 911SC. It's missing the cover so it just glares white light at me. Can anyone please tell me why it might be on?

On my 83SC the light top center between
speedo and tach is the oxygen ( lambda )
sensor, if it goes out or is acting up
your car will "idle hunt" the idle varies
like between 900 to 1100 back and forth
you can unplug the sensor and your car
will run fine, the sensor is located on top
of your catalitic converter, it's a round
cylinder about the size of a roll of quarters with a wire comming out of the top
going into the engine compartment below
the fuel filter, close to the right rear
plug wire.

I believe the O2 sensor light is triggered by mileage, to remind you to replace the sensor as part of the 30k mile maintenance regimen. Although my idle normally lets me know there's a problem long before the light comes on : )

That's right. OXS lights usually are triggered by mileage alone. Resetting the light is usually a matter of pushing a reset button in the back of an instrument, like the speedo. Porsches are probably no different.

There is a test lead in the rear fuse box to check the oxygen sensor duty cycle. A dwell meter is all that is needed for this job, which can verify that the lambda sensor is working. I don't replace these until they quit working.
