Need help fast

I'm in downtown Cincinnati, OH with bad driver side rear wheel bearings. I need a good repair shop and I don't know anyone here. Can someone recommend a reputable shop? Also, does anyone know what a fair estimate would be?

Although for a (Porsche) track car I found this on the PCA site...every other recommendation I've seen is near Cleveland....

"For a track car in Cincinnati, that is easy. Call John Wright, Wright Tuning. http://www.wrighttuning.com/ "

4009 Borman Drive
Batavia, Ohio 55103
513 735-2300

Hopefully a local will chime in soon.

I've got it under control now. I had an idea. Uhaul truck+trailer, one way home = $191. Heck, I can't get it towed for anywhere near that. Now I can fix it myself instead of the $900 I was quoted earlier. Thanks for looking and offering advise.

Sure it's rear wheel bearings? Did you check for loose CV joint bolts?

Icemaster 10-02-2006 06:37 PM

Sheesh, I'm sorry. I feel like a horses a$$ for not checkiing in earlier in the day, I'm maybe 10 minutes out of downtown. If youre still around, I've PM'd you with my number, give me a call if you need help.

No I didn't, I was driving into town and the sound made me think bearings but anything is possible. It's in a parking garage right now, not leaving until Friday. I plan on looking at it closer after work today.

I did some searching and now I'm not sure if it's bearings or cv joints. The noise started as squealing which then became a combination of that and grinding with some clunks mixed in. It sounded like a bearing that had locked up, overheated, and had the balls come out of the race in an electric motor. It would do that for a minute then stop and become a very low drone. Then it would start over a few minutes later. If I drive slow it's not bad but at highway speeds it is. What do you guys think? Another curious thing is this morning when I tried to start the car it would crank but not fire, this also happened yesterday. The generator light didn't come on while cranking like it usually does this morning, though. I didn't have time to look deeper since I needed to get to work.

Got it home, Uhaul ended up costing me $150. I started tearing it down and it is definately bearings. I pulled the drive shaft and looked into the trailing arm from behind and saw missing pieces in the bearing cage. Now my problem is pulling the hub. I have tried a slide hammer with no luck. My manual says to use Porsche tool P297 which looks like a solid shaft of steel to drive the hub out from the back side. I made one and tried driving it with a 5lb hammer but it still won't budge. Looks like I'll have to pull the trailing arm. :(

see the picture on down the thread a bit. be careful if it's on jackstands, that you don't pull the car off them onto yourself. keep the other wheel on the ground.

Thanks John. I was scared to use my 36" prybars for fear of bending the hub but it took very little effort once I tried it. It popped right off. Here is a pic of the mayhem.
