Fantasy
Hi this is a pretty stupid story so I apolagize now, but I want to know if others have thoughts or dreams like this.
Anyone on this site LOVES PORSCHES just as I do, but most people I meet think that everyone that owns a Porsche is RICH! We ALL know this is not true, but then I start thinking...I read Panorama, and excellence and surf the web all about PORSCHE. And I see where people get this thought, that rich people=Porsches. I think Porsche owners fall into 2 distinctly different groups, there are those of us who own Porsches and Love them for what they are (us poor guys), and there is the group who knows very little about thier cars(and don't want to know) except that it is a status symbol (rich guys) I don't want to seem critical of all rich owners, some probably fit into both catagories. Well this is where my Fantasy takes place, I write a letter (like this one ![]() But This part is a dream that I actually had last night, which prompted this post I was driving my car, which is a 77 Targa, and I was stopped at a gas station, when a man walked over to me and started talking, then all the sudden he told me that he wanted to give me the money to make my car "the car of my dreams", I can still see the completed car in my head. It was finished in my dream. I told you that I love these Cars, I really stay up at night just thinking and dreaming, am I weird. My wish is that we all meet our own Rich Sponsor, and live happily ever after riding off into the sunset, especially Warren, he deserves it more than anyone for all his help. Hope I didn't bore you all Shawn |

What? You mean you're not rich? Who let you on this forum? And another thing - stop eating ice cream before you go to bed.

We do need rich Porsche owner to buy our vehicles new and then grow tired of them when the novelty wears off or their lease is up and depreciate them and then put them back on the market for the REAL Porsche lovers.....US.

That's right. It doesn't pay to knock the rich Porsche owner too much. Don't bite the hand that feeds!
It is frustrating to know sometimes that all that brilliant research and technology goes to someone who doesn't appreciate it, except for the fact it looks good. Doesn't happen all the time of course. Lamborghini has it far worse tho! Rod Stewart likes them after all..... I was sitting at the lights a couple of days ago and there was a new 996 facing me from the other direction. I decided to play it cool- after all, I thought these rich folk wern't so friendly, and too stuck-up to spot an old battler like mine. But no! I got the full wave of acknowledgement along with a nod and smile from the white haired player behind the wheel. Admittedly, both cars were silver, and I guess Man of Taste had seen those evolution shots that get revamped at each new model release. That's the second time it's happened recently too. First was with a Bee-u-te-ful lady and her kids who drew up alongside in a 996 Cabriolet on the motorway. Mummy's got a car literally worth ten times as much as me, but the kiddies couldn't stop their eyes popping out at my humble ride. We departed after some time cat and mousing, with a friendly wave and tooting of horns. Magnificent! I have noted that new Boxter owners are a bit less generous in ther appreciation of heritage. Must be a new money thing..... I guess one good thing about wealthy first owners is that our cars got good maintenance, which translates to longevity at our end. And now they are fortunate to be parked in their proper garages, with real enthusiasts looking after them finally. What a life! ------------------ '72 911 TE |

Matt,
Same thing happened to me on H1 here in Oahu. Beeeutiful lady came up in a silver 959 (yes i said 959)(even had it on the license plate as "IXVIX"). She had whom I assumed to be her equally beautiful daughter in the car. We too played a little then it was time for me to head to Pearl Harbor Naval Station. Couple of acknowledging toots on the horn, a wave and some grins and it was over! Snobs be damned! Tim 1972 911 TE |

Had to chime in. Been driving performance cars all my 27 years, mostly of the American muscular variety. I have always wanted a 911 since I saw my buddies race car. I was never a huge fan just respected a well built/engineered car. I too thought most of the owners were NOT like my friend or me for that matter. Snobby rich folks that drive Porsches because their daddies could and did. I'm over in Europe right now and found a US spec 87 Targa I could take home and finally became a member of the club. I'm hooked. These things give me the same feeling I had screwing around with those racing go-carts as a real young kid... nimble, surprisingly quick, effortless acceleration, lots of street confidnce. What a wonderful car. I do all, well 98% of all my own work. I was scared when I bought my car thinking I would have been lost. Things tend to go bad quick for me

A bright red Porsche 911 pulls up beside a new Rolls Royce convertible stopped at a traffic light. The Porsche window goes down and the driver says "you got a jacuzzi in that thing?". The lights change and the 911 roars off without waiting for a reply, the owner of the Rolls drives back to the dealership and asks about the jacuzzi option.
Some time later the Rolls owner is driving around town looking for the bright red 911 which he finds in the back of a parking lot with the windows all steamed up. He hammers on the roof with his fist and eventually one of the windows winds down a couple of inches. The Rolls owner says "yeah, I do have a jacuzzi in my car". The Porsche owner replies "You got me out of the shower to tell me that?" |

Very well said guys, I am an 18 year old who owns my own Porsche. It is a 944 but it is still a Porsche. I always dreamed of owning a Porsche, any Porsche. My family and friends always laughed at me. Now who is laughing, I got the car of my dreams, still trying to pay it off. And now I need too fix the clutch, ugh. Someday I will pay my bills, but I know exactly how it is to be a poor Porsche owner. I am glad that I am poor, we appriate what we got more. Someday I will too be rich, but I won't be like the other rich, I won't forget where I came from. I will give to the little guy because I once was the little guy.

In our local (NNJR) PCA rag, someone wrote a piece about the new owners and their lack of appreciation for Porsche tradition. Blamed the company for not communicating the headlight flash thing, for example.
I have flashed my damn lights at a dozen Porsches in the last few weeks, and only ONE has acknowledged! It was a recent car, maybe a 993. Never a Boxster, never a 996 or even a 964. I continue to try, but I'm dismayed. I never drive my car without being constantly aware of what and how cool it is. Maybe it's just pride, or the novelty of new ownership, but these other guys seem about as enthused as I am when I drive my dark green Ford Explorer - that's sad. Lots of people think I'm loaded now, thanks to the Porsche. I don't mind the impression, but they really miss the point. When I introduced myself at a recent PCA meeting, I got lots of friendly grins when I said I was having fun getting my hands dirty. That's the kind of appreciation I really want! ------------------ Roger '85 Carrera 3.2 Coupe aka "Sputterbug" http://www.rogerplacer.net/911/ |

Most of the time when I'm driving my car I don't see Porsches along side of me, and when I do see them on the other side of the highway I always look at them, most of them don't even look my way. I'm sure they heard me, I have a super loud exhaust. So far I've seen only one, a lady in a '74-'77 targa look over the other side of the highway at me. Oh well. Boxter owners, well, never mind.
Stray-I agree wholeheartedly with you. I am 19 and own my own 911. There have been people who've laughed at me, said I'd never do it, but I proved them wrong. Although I'm struggling to pay for it, it's damn well worth it. I've got more than just a clutch(read...syncros in tranny). Have fun with your 944. Tim-There's a freaking 959 on the island? Holy sh**!! I thought they were illegal in the US? Maybe a kit? I think I need to get one like that. Humm...beautiful lady with beautiful daughter...me tinks I need one girlfriend right about now(now THAT'S a fantasy!). I have yet to see this IXVIX, hopefully I will. Hopefully she'll come to the next meeting! ------------------ Jeff 1976 911S [This message has been edited by Rufblackbird (edited 06-20-2000).] |

Are we maybe giving the 996/Boxter owners a hard time here?? well, maybe not... I think that older 11 owners have some sort of special place for others.. These cars are getting more and more rare among the accord/camry population. ALways catches my eye when I see another and the folks usually wave or stop to chat. Most of these people are quite knowledgable also. They ask questions like "what did you set your ride height to?" or, Have a look at my SSI system, etc..
Question.. do all of you flash/wave at 944 owners?? maybe they think we're snobs?? |

Yeah, I acknowledge 944 owners, and even have a friend who is a 924 owner (ok, ok, maybe just an aquaintance..heheh).
Not many of them return the acknowledgement it has to be said. I think that for the greater part they seem to blend into motoring mainstream more than the 911 bunch. Maybe they do think that we're snobs, after all it was 911 owners -previously 356- who started the myth that they were the only real Porsches (no intention of of opening that can of worms believe me)and maybe we're reaping the fallout from that. Sorry to keep telling 'road stories', but I just remembered an occasion recently when I was sandwiched in between a 928 (front) and a 944 Turbo (behind). I thought it was a bit of fun and stuck in the convoy for a while. We cruised at similar speeds, but every now and then the 928 would bury his pedal for a couple of secs and waited to see if we would follow. Then the 944 guy would do the same from behind. Eventually we each started to jostle for the lead (still staying within the speed limit, sane but calculated manoeveures)and must have looked like those indoor track cyclists swooping and gliding. I mention this because at no time did the other two look across at me and acknowledge what we all knew we were doing. I was digging it and having a laugh to myself, and seeing the expression on other motorists faces....they could ALL see it. Eventually we all went our separate ways, but I couldn't help feeling a sense of pity that we wern't all sharing a Porsche moment, merely an ego one. Money had nothing to do with it as we all had similarly valuable cars, just different expressions of an idea. I'll stand by my belief that my idea was best though (of course). !! ------------------ '72 911 TE |

I do get waves from the 911's, usually, actually I think I get more from the 911's than from the 944's. Thats sad to me. Right now I am going through a stage of withdraw, my poor baby is in the garage getting its clutch replaced. I only wish I had the time to do it myself, but I am struggling to pay the car off. I still think the purchase was a wise chose. Others seem to think differently, but they never driven one.

I used to flash (the fog lights) during the day in my 944, but since I removed them, I can only get a wave out... I was fortunate enough to talk to a 993 Twin Turbo, a Boxter S, and a 911 SC owner. On each occasion we pulled over at the next gas station, ice cream shop whatever. I must say I felt good about the loyalty for Porsche, and the general appericiation of fine engineering, and all the effort that went into these cars.
I recall on one occasion when I waved at a 911 owner, and he could only get two fingers up from his hand to wave back, and this was at a parking lot, at speeds of about 10mph. Ofcourse that was not so pleasant. Mostly from the watercooled owners I get something more like, where do you get your car serviced, who's your mechanic and the like, than nice car, or another way of letting each other know we appericiate these cars. I had a woman just stare at me, after I stopped at a gas station, and she was filling up her, what seemed to be identical to mine, 944, color, rims and all. In general, I'd say the 911 people are a little more aware of what's going on around them, since most watercooled owners don't quite feel strongly about driving a Porsche. I on the other hand, realize how superior Porsches really are to cars from their era, and have so much more charm, and character, and are beginning to stand out in todays bland grocerry getters. I've heard that most 911 owners are snobs all over, but this has not been my experiance on the road, however I do not know how to comment after some comments I've received at this board. (regardless of if I deserved it or not). Enjoy your Porsches, and flash at your fellow Porsche drivers on the road! This is a PCA member, soon to club race his 944 speaking! (My first auto-x coming in 26 days now, thanks to some advice I've received here as well ![]() Ahmet |

Tim:
There were only two 959 in the United States. One was owned by Otis Chandler, of the Los Angeles Times, and he donated it to the Petersen Museum. The other is owned by Bill Gates, and he keeps his in his 30 car underground garage, photos of which I have seen from the architect who designed it. Neither of these can be driven, legally, in the streets. They do not meet DOT rules; I think they are okay for EPA rules, but not DOT. All others are kits; but even a cursory inspection will let you know that they are kits. The 959 was done as an entirely new body, with twin-turbos, etc. not as a basic 911 with body panels added.....Andras |

Andras - A couple of years ago the DOT opened up the gates for import of exotic euro cars. Specific provisions apply but I've seen 959s advertised by euro collectors. Don't know if there have been any takers.

Well, with their new ad campaign and all it seems Weideking and the boys at Porsche WANT to appeal to the status-symbol crowd. I used to get funny enough looks in my 914 from the collar-up crowd - now they want to build an SUV? I finally let my PCA membership lapse, just b/c I think the new corporate direction is crap. Plus I got tired of having to worry whether or not anybody would notice a sagging fog lamp, or a ding on the hood : ) I guess for me Porsche will always remain an era, since it no longer appears to be a car-nut's company...
