7:31 ring and pinion installation: DIY job?
Well, since I live at nearly 7000 feet and am seriously robbed of my (very missed) sea-level HP, I am considering swapping in a 7:31 ring and pinion to my 915 tranny for a bit more gusto, especially at the track.
Is this a DIY job? I have read about 'proper shimming' and the such.. The tranny is in otherwise great condition and was rebuilt a couple of years ago. Would I need to do a complete tear-down? Finally, looks like I missed out on a recently posted set for sale in the classifieds, so if anyone know of a GOOD set for sale.... Thanks -Brad

I think the simple answer is no, this is not a do-it-yourself job. I can't remember if it was Steve Weiner or Gary Fairbanks that told me this, but they said they had a pile of useless 915 cases laying outside their shop from incorrectly setup ring and pinion gears. Evidently this requires some special tooling.

I can't say whether this is a DYI or not, but there is a great write up on it here:
