Removing Turn Signal/High Beam Switch
 

Anybody ever done this on an 86 or so 911? I removed the small screws on either side of the steering wheel column and the halves will not seperate. It looks liek the steering wheel may need to come off. Thanks in advance.

I've done this on my 83SC, it's a ***** !!
in order to get the turn signal/highbeam
switch off, the steering wheel has to come off, there are two screws on the outside on each side, one by the turn switch and one on the other side by the wiper , after removing
the steering wheel there are four smaller
screws inside the black steering colom box
also one screw for the horn contact, after
that the assembly has to be gently wiggled
out, this is tricky,just take your time.
under the dash kinda behind the headlight
switch,near the ignition switch,there are
two black cables,you can follow them out
from the tun signal assembly, they plug into
a panel along with some other wires
these are round plugin connectors,they are
keyed so take them all out,you'll need the
room! OK, here is when I had problems.
I was able to get only one of the two wire
sets out, I got frustrated and splice in
the other set of wires, this has been 5,000
miles ago and everything has been working
fine, by splicing I mean I cut the origional
wires and soldered in the new wires,taped
it up,reinstalled the rest of the wires,
carefully put the new turnswitch back in the
housing and reinstalled everything else the
way it came out and I was back to as good as
new !

A couple of other points, make sure you center the steering wheel Before you pull it off and mark the hub and shaft to help with realignment. Also disconnect the battery to prevent any possible shorts. Finaly, if there is a Harbor Freight & Tools near you, get one each of their real long needle nose and long bent nose pliers as they are great for getting into the column type areas. They were cheap, but mine have lasted over 3 years with no problems. The best advice I got when I did mine, was to take your time and take pictures if it looks confusing. Good luck.

When I replaced the combo switch in my 76, I also found it very difficult to remove and install the plugs into the light switch. I found it easier to just remove the light switch from the dash to gain access to the plugs.
