Can you lower a power window by hand?
Does anyone know if it's possible to crank a power window up/down by hand?
I need to remove the window frame and apparently the window should be in the down position (mine is up). The door is off the car... so no power and no wiring harness in the car (not yet). Is it possible to rig something up to provide juice to the window regulator? |

you could hotwire a feed and ground from a car that is running. I had to do that to get the windows up on my mercedes when the ignition lock failed and the key wouldn't turn.
Just find a fused hot line on the working car and connect it to the hot side of the window regulator, then run a line from the battery negative connection on the good car to the negative side of the window regulator. I don't know if you can crank the window by hand cause my car only has the manual window regulators

Matt,
Excellent tip, thank you. I'll fiddle with this over the weekend and see if I can get it working. Thanks again. |

Your signature doesn't mention what year car you have. I know the later models (80's cars) come with a big allen wrench that's intended to be used to crank the window up/down in case the motor fails. I would assume that contingency would go back through the years. In my '88 it was behind the tweeter grill which is just below the window switches in this pic

Steve,
Thanks for the pic. The tub is a 1970 and the doors are from an '85... I'll check them tonight for the allen nut by the window switches. Hope it does the trick. |

Steve,
No luck... I checked the door but it didn't have the allen bolt/nut you mentioned. It must only be a feature in the 88 doors... lucky you!

I would think that if you were to disconnect the arms from the window it could then be pushed down.

I just replaced my window motor (drivers side). The window was up when I started. With an allen wrench, I removed the 6 (I think) bolts holding the track in the door. When the track was disconnected, I could move the window up or down by manipulating the track in the door.
