Help - can't open oil thermostat cover.

I am trying to replace the oil thermostat in the right rear fender well. The housing cover is a round metal disk with a horizontal slot in it which won't budge even with plenty of PB Blaster.

I have tried a monster screwdriver and a crow bar end to no avail. I am slowly trashing the slot. Any magic tool advice?

Ulrich

you should take it off of the car, and then you can get a pipe wrench on there. secure the body with a second pipe wrench held in the opposite direction.

I was about to give up on removing the cover on mine a few months ago. It finally loosened by using an adjustable pipe wrench. Just be careful not to put the teeth of the wrench onto the housing itself, only bite into the disc cover itself.

Good luck!

There is a factory tool for removing those big slotted covers.

I got mine off while it was warm. It seems the heat helped to loosen the cap. I used a monkey wrench. It did eat the cap up pretty bad, but I believe our host sells the cap for a fraction of the cost of the thermostat.
