Amateur Racing at Daytona
Okay all you wanna-be racers:
I remember that there was a posting a few days ago about the costs of amateur racing at the Daytona or Sebring level. Well, a group of us guys of Potomac Region have looked into it, and here are the sad facts: Competitive Car w/ 3.6 litre $ 130,000 Tires for Daytona alone 13,000 Mechanical Costs per race 6,000 Crew costs (long races need crews) 4,000 Miscellaneous (food, travel, etc.) 4,000 SubTotal $ 157,000 And this gets you to Daytona only. Now, figure the on-going costs for tires, mechanical, crew, and miscellaneous, for more races, and you will see that only a certain few people would be able to fund such a venture without sponsorship. Yes, I know that the car has residual value, but ONLY WHEN YOU SELL IT, AND THEN YOU CAN'T RACE IT ANYMORE. So, I guess we don't know how good we have it with the Porsche Club of America, where you can "run what you brung". And though their races don't last 24 hours or even 3 hours, they sure are a gas for the total hour or more that you get to run, at only $100-300 per weekend entry fee. And these Club events will give you the adrenalin fix that can carry you through the days before the next event, so you won't kill yourselves on the highways drag racing, and other such dangerous things. If anyone has any questions, ask away. We have researched this, and families and jobs keep us from pursuing this full time. Sigh, to be young and to have a rich poppa!!!!...Andras |
