Adj. Valves with dial gauge???

I have done valves but never with a dial gauge. Has anyone done this? Do I need to get the gauge and z-holder? I want to make sure the valves are perfect. Is it worth it? Any information would be very welcome. Thanks in advance.

There have been earlier discussions on this BB about this. Check it out. Maybe about a month ago. I'm one of the bigger proponents of this method. There are others who consider the feeler gauge to work very well. I have always struggled with them somewhat, and now that I've used a dial indicator, I will never go back. I use the z-holder ($30) and the gauge was under $20. the catalytic converter comes off for this. Deadly accurate results.

Jim, Do you bolt the z holder to the valve cover stud? I think that watching the dial would be a more dead on method. I have used the feeler but I guess I don't trust myself as much as if I could "read" the dial.I will say that the valves do sound fine after the last svc. Thanks.

Yes, I do attach it to one of the valve cover studs. I tried using a magnetic holder, but this failed. It is necessary to use somethign that holds the gauge still. I mean STILL.

And yes, you will "see" the clearance. In fact, if you wanted to take the time, you coudl first record the clearance before re-setting. That way, you could track just what a particular valve was doing between adjustments. I don't do this, but I'm a big fan of this method. When the clearance is '0025", you can see that. When it is .006", you can see that quite clearly too. And when it is exactly correct, it is obvious.

With the gauge in place, you rock the rocker back and forth. The needle on the dial gauge moves exactly "X" distance. This is your clearance.
