SC air con system

My SC has a large cooler under the engine lid, and a small cooler , with fan mounted behind front bumper.
Am trying to determine how these are supposed to be connected into the system.
Normally you would expect the compressed (discharge) side of the compressor to feed into the coolers (both? in series) before going through the evapourator (air con unit).
But mine seems to feed from the discharge side to the small cooler (+fan), thru the evapourator then returning to the large cooler and into the suction side of the compressor.
Does this sound right? Does not make a lot of sense to me.
I would have thought it would be better to be going through the large cooler either before or straight after the small one.
The system had been dismantled, and reconstituted, and U/S before I got the car, so have no idea if it is plumbed right.
Thanks
Alan

The refrigerant gas path is: compressor via its smaller hose to the decklid condenser, then to the front condenser, then to the receiver/drier in the left front fender well, then to the evaporator, then back to the compressor via the larger of the two hoses at the compressor.

Many thanks Brian,
Makes sense, and more sense than the current plumbing. It may even work properly now.
Thanks

This is in the wrong forum but I don't even believe the below described hookup is possible unless someone has changed the hose fittings or made adapters. Have you mixed up the discharge and suction ports on the compressor?

"thru the evapourator then returning to the large cooler and into the suction side of the compressor."

Well, it definitely comes out of the large cooler and into the suction side of the compressor. And the discharge side connection disappears down the RHS side of the body.
Since receiving Brians reply, I have changed them over - but it is not easy, the large hose (suction side- lower) has a lot of trouble clearing the oil filter and body work. I tried to find a shorter oil filter - no luck.It fitted a lot easier the other way - which may be why it was like that.
Which forum should this be in? I did look for another option.

Alan

Can you post an image of the compressor where the hoses connect?

Alan L 10-06-2006 03:26 PM

Hi Jim, I have switched them over at the compressor end - little hose out of discharge (top), like Brian says, big hose at suction side.
Bit of a struggle fittting them in, but tweeked the valve units to different angles , which gave a bit more room.
Will try and post a pic, just not too sure how.
Will have a look.
Thanks
Alan

Hi Jim,
Have finally gotten to post photo - had real problem with website - dont know if at my end or there.
Have managed to gas it up, and seems OK, so suspect this is correct?

Just went to the garage and checked my 81SC. Mine looks like yours now. Little hose on top goes to decklid.
