Wow Mackgoo!!!

Sweet! Congrats!!! What kind of body did you use (Beck?) Did you have to do a lot of fabrication to fit the six in it?

Actualy I must admit this is not my car. My kit I expect some time in July. I'm putting a 2.7l RS spec. engine in VS their 2.2T. Also my car will be carbon finished in clear I think that will look wild, all the chrome will be powder coated black with a wine interior.
The kit itself comes from a place called Thunder Ranch, it comes ready for the six. I will post my progress as I go.

Having been out to Thunder Ranch several times (an advantage of living in San Diego) I saw the ALLOY wheels they sell that look just like the early style steel wheels and they are really neat. They might be worth checking out if you haven't seen them?

I believe this car was at the Carlisle Import/Kit show in May. Same engine, same tires anyway...must've been the same spyder. That thing must weight all of 1200 lbs!

That was them at Carlisle, a Farther Son team. Their next project is an RS.

Early_S_Man 06-30-2000 06:34 PM

Actually, with the 911 engine and transaxle, it is probably a real heavyweight at 1450-1500 lbs ... the versions with VW Type 1 engines and transaxles weigh in around 1350 lbs!

Anybody seen an update on Chuck Beck's '906/Carrera 6' project?

Just as a point of reference, what does one of these spyder kits generally cost (sans engine, which I am assuming you provide yourself)? Are they a completely build it & paint it yourself proposition or can one buy a basic roller and finish it from there?

mackgoo 07-01-2000 03:34 PM

The kit starts at around 16K. It's a VW front end, the beam comes with the kit you need everything else. In the rear you have either 914 or 911 bearing carriers welded into his arms then brakes for that model are needed. I went with 911 so I could get the seperate emergency brake assembly. The 914 would have been nice but I didn't like the idea if you develop a leak around the lever for the emergency brake the caliper is junk. As you say you provide the engine and transmission.
