Rear Wheel "Chirp"

Okay Andras...as promised. I finally got to the bottom of the right rear wheel "chirp" I was hearing during every revolution of the wheel.....it WAS the emergency brake! When I replaced the right rear wheel bearing last week I disconnected the emergency brake cable. After installing the wheel bearing I reinstalled the brake cable but did not realize I had to check the "play" on the cable. As a result I inadvertantly left the cable loose thereby causing the emergency brake assembly in the right rear to be "sloppy". Soooo,....with every revolution of the wheel the brake pads were alternating touching the inside of the brake rotor causing a "chirp". Reassembled the right rear correctly and....WA LA....no more chirp!

Thanks to Andras and Warren (psss.....happy belated birthday) once again for your invaluable assistance and sage advise.

Years ago when I was working on planes for a living someone told me that when your trouble shooting, If you can't figure it out "go where man has last been" or in other words "What was touched last before the problem started".

That simple advice has saved me countless hours. I have found some of what turned out to be my own mistakes that way.

I hope that little tid bit helps someone out there before they spend hours and $$$$

regards,

I guess if there is a lesson here (and I learned it in 1978) ... it is that there isn't much space inside that tiny emergency brake assembly! No room AT ALL for any extra length in a maladjusted emergency-brake cable!!!

I bet you are GLAD it wasn't a more serious problem ... I can only imagine what kind of charges a dealer would have run up chasing the problem!!!

And, just as H2O suggested, backtracking to the last one or two things you did in a hurry to get the beast back on the road can be most 'educational' ... in teaching oneself which 'shortcuts' AREN'T such a good idea, and which 'sticking points' require a bit more care, next-time!
